Who is at Risk of Hepatitis B Infection?

The following groups of people should go for hepatitis B vaccination as they are at risk of hepatitis B virus infection (HBV infection):

1. Health care professionals
2. The patients getting blood products transfused
3. The individuals having multiple sexual partners or unhealthy sexual behavior
4. Drug abusers
5. The individuals who travel to the areas with prevalent hepatitis B infection
6. The newborns or babies who born to mothers who are carriers of HBV or with hepatitis B infection
7. The individuals who belong to HBV prevalent areas
8. The patients suffering from blood diatheses like sickle cell anemia or thalassemia
9. The patients undergoing organ transplant
10. The people who are at risk of developing chronic liver disease (CLD) such as the individuals carrying hepatitis B virus or who are alcohol abusers
11. The patients with diabetes, chronic renal failure (CRF) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
12. The individuals who use the utensils of the patients with HBV infection
13. The persons exposed to HBV infection like policemen, fire-brigade personnel or army personnel

Hepatitis B vaccination schedule (Engerix-B) comprises of three injections to be injected into muscles at 0, 1, 6 months OR 0, 1, 2 months. However, for 0, 1, 2 months schedule, fourth dose is recommended at 12 month. Adult dose of HBV vaccine 20 micrograms (1 ml suspension).
