Depilus Cream: A Hair Removal Cream

What is Depilus cream?

Depilus cream is used to treat hirsutism or to remove facial hairs. In other words, it is a hair removal cream. It contains a substance called eflornithine hydrochloride that slows or decreases the abnormal hair growth (hair removal cream). Depilus cream is applied to the affected area of the face or the other parts of the body. Depilus cream is used to remove excessive hair, especially in the patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCO).

What is the mechanism of action of Depilus cream?

It reduces follicular cell growth rate and slows down the hair growth. Eflornithine inhibits an enzyme named ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) present in the human skin and catalyses the biosynthesis of polyamines necessary for cell growth.

How to use Depilus cream?

To use Depilus cream, wash your mouth, dry it and then apply the cream gently two times a day. Wash your mouth after 4 hours. To get best results, massage a thin layer of the cream on chin, upper lip or other affected areas of face.

How long it takes to see improvement of hair removal?

It takes 4-8 weeks to see the improvement in hair removal. However, hair may regrow after the discontinuation of the treatment. It is not a depilatory preparation, but improves patient's appearance by reducing hair growth.

For children below 12 years of age, the safety and effectiveness of Depilus (Eflornithine HCL) have not been established yet. However, in geriatrics, no apparent difference of safety and effectiveness has been observed.

Yes, studies have shown that topical use of eflornithine HCL enhances the hair removal and reduces inflammatory papules. Eflornithine HCL reduces follicular cell growth rate while laser hair treatment suspends hair growth by heating the hair and surrounding tissues.
